R.I.P. Geraldine Kane of Pink Kross

Scumbag by Pink Kross

"Upon their formation in 1993, the three piece of Pink Kross brought on their hybrid of surf and punk to their native of Glasgow, Scotland. Hailing the likes of The Ramones, The Lunachicks and the Cosmic Psychos as a major inspiration, Bouvier Records packaged the bands first EP Punk or Die in 1994. Eventually releasing three additional singles throughout the next two years, the settled line up of Vic Blue (drums/ vocals), Jane Strain (bass/ vocals) and Jude Fuzz (guitar/ vocals) put out their first full-length Chopper Chix from V.P. Hell in 1998." ~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide

Beach House have a new 7' (mmm vinyl) single titled "Used To Be" with a b-side demo version of "Apple Orchard" from 2005. I am in love with this deceptively simple song and I know you will be too. They have been touring extensively to support their sophomore album and are now working on a new record in their home town of Baltimore.

Sigur Rós Concert Film News

News from the Sigur Ros camp:
"We can now confirm that the shows were indeed recorded and pass on a bit more information on this. the shoot was directed by acclaimed director vincent morisset, who also shot the “neon bible” interactive video for arcade fire. the footage is currently being edited in montreal and promises to be a nice contrast to “heima“, which had a lot of links to context, time and surroundings, whereas this forthcoming concert footage will be purely performance-based.
as is fairly common in sigur rós land, it will be released when it’s ready and, as such, we dont have any ideas of release dates - but we’re looking forward to it already."

THE OUGHT-EIGHT SOCIAL REGISTRY REVIEW

"This year just *flew* by did it not? On a macro scale, we threw a couple
great SXSW events, moved offices, bought a label touring van nick-named
"Roja", partnered up with new fashion label AHAHA for a bunch of craziness,
did some solid live music podcasting, held down CMJ.....

We would of course add that TSR released some great records by some
fantastic bands but we are a little biased. Just in case you don't believe
us, we thought it would be good to recap some of the great times we had this
year. To soundtrack it we've included links to two mix-tapes, the first one
plays as a survey of our 2008 release schedule while the bonus-mix tape
collects a lot of the unreleased stuff we, um, 'leaked' this year...live
tracks, remixes, things of that ilk."

Tiny Tim: He Showered Obsessively and Wore Diapers

and did this...

Purchase Tiny Tim Music

Excerpts from tinytim.org:
"Tiny Tim was born Herbert Khaury, and gave his birth date as April 12, 1932. The son of a Lebanese father and Jewish mother, he grew up in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, and was a loner, eventually dropping out of high school."

"His first performances -- under the alias Larry Love -- took place in the early '50s, and according to legend, he debuted at a lesbian cabaret in Greenwich Village called the Page 3, where he became a regular."

"His eccentric personality became as well-known as his music: he was obsessed with bodily cleanliness, and his distaste for sex seemed logical when paired with his gentle, asexual demeanor."

"Tim married his girlfriend, 17-year-old Victoria Budinger (known as Miss Vicki, in typically respectful Tim fashion), on the Johnny Carson show. The couple later had a daughter, Tulip, but mostly lived apart, and divorced after eight years."

"He remarried in 1984 to 23-year-old Miss Jan. They lived apart most of the time and the marriage lasted until 1994. Tim joined a circus for 36 weeks. In the late '80s, he moved to Des Moines, IA. In 1992. In August of 1995 he married for a third time to Miss Sue, and he moved to Minneapolis."

"In September of 1996, he suffered a heart attack while performing at a ukulele festival in Massachusetts. Upon his release from the hospital, Tim resumed his concert schedule, but sadly, on November 30, he suffered another heart attack in Minneapolis while performing "Tip-Toe Through the Tulips," and died an hour later."

Indie Darlings Ida on Vinyl

Polyvinyl releases three classic Ida albums for the first time ever on vinyl.
Ida Reissues

2008 has been a banner year for the seminal Brooklyn indie-folk band Ida with the release of their seventh album Lovers Prayers, the companion EP My Fair, My Dark, and a tour of the UK with fellow slow-core pioneers Low.

Polyvinyl in cooperation with esteemed DIY label Simple Machines is pleased to announce the release of Ida's first 3 albums on vinyl for the first time ever. Each album is printed on deluxe double gatefold jackets, pressed on 180 gram vinyl and come with a digital download coupon for the entire album .

Ida - Tales of Brave Ida

This somber debut from the New York duo Dan Littleton and Elizabeth Mitchell marks a great beginning for Ida.
Tales of Brave Ida features melodic, fuzzy guitar work that is comparable to the haunting, droning aspects of the
Velvet Underground and Nick Drake while still maintaining an original sense of style. With the canny addition of
a gloomy cello, provided by Julia Kent, the album does an excellent job of portraying dismal beauty. Dreamy songs such as "Tempting," "Slowdance," and "Vacation" make this debut release worthwhile.

Ida - I Know About You

Ida's second full-length release, I Know About You, is a giant step forward from the band's first,
Tales of Brave Ida. With the addition of drummer Michael Littleton, the songs come into full bloom with new
rhythms and interesting dynamics that add to the band's prominent style. Tracks such as "Back Burner" and
"Treasure Chest," showcase the piercing vocal intricacies of Ida's managing duo, Dan Littleton and Elizabeth
Mitchell. I Know About You, is a breakthrough in more ways than one, a mandatory gem in Ida's vast catalogue.

Ida - Ten Small Places

Ida's third release, Ten Small Places, was recorded over a several year span, in various studios. Instead of a concentrated, thesis oriented album, this release is more of a collection of 14 songs that illustrate the band's
dynamics. Dan Littleton and Elizabeth Mitchell continue to showcase their interwoven guitar and vocal work with the added help of new member, bassist Karla Schickele, who contributes with compositions like "Fallen Arrow" and "Poor Dumb Bird." The album also contains multiple covers, including Neil Young's
"Everybody Knows This is Nowhere," and Brian Eno's "Golden Hours." Ten Small Places continues to persuade listeners with warm, intimate material, while also giving fans a different sense of what makes the band special.

Of Montreal Interpreted by Jon Brion

The innovation of the packaging of their latest cd / LP Skeletal Lamping was inspiring. I wish I had caught them live. They will be on letterman tonight and it should provide to be a theatrical performance.

And some remix news:
"Jon Brion recently went into the studio and recorded new portions of Eluardian Instance. Brion literally reinterpreted the songs by taking the basic tracks and added more instrumentation and backing vocals - including the work of Nickel Creek vocalist and mandolin-player Chris Thile. Pre-orders are underway now and the EP/12" is due in stores January 27." You might know of Jon Brion via his work with Fiona pple, or perhaps from his various musical endeavors - including scores for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Magnolia.

INDIGO GIRLS

NEWS:

Poseidon And The Bitter Bug

March 24, IG Recordings/Vanguard Records

The Indigo Girls launch their own imprint to release their first studio album in 3 years

The release will contain 2 CDs – a full band version and acoustic disc with a bonus track

It’s been two decades since the Indigo Girls launched their career with their independently released debut album, 1987’s Strange Fire. Now, after entertaining millions of fans with their 10 major-label studio albums (nine on Epic Records and one, 2006’s Despite Our Differences, on Hollywood Records), Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have come full circle with the independent release of their new 2-CD album, Poseidon And The Bitter Bug, on their new label IG Recordings, distributed through Vanguard Records.

The new album reunites the Grammy-winning duo with veteran producer, arranger and keyboardist Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Los Lobos and others), who worked on the Indigo Girls’ acclaimed 2006 release, Despite Our Differences. Longtime bassist Clare Kenny, drummer Matt Chamberlin and engineer David Boucher make up the rest of the core band but the sound is pure Indigo Girls, with uplifting, effortless harmonies; honest, passionately involved lyrics and infectious melodies.

“Mitchell was able to build a bridge between Emily’s songs and my songs more successfully than anyone we’ve worked with, says Ray, “he’s a musicians’ musician and has a very clear idea of what will work.” Adds Saliers, “He likes Amy’s music and he likes my music, which is not the easiest thing to find because we are so different and our songs are different.”

The album was recorded in Atlanta in a whirlwind three week session – they wanted to keep a sense of spontaneity and discovery to the process. And it’s the songwriting that shines on Poseidon, with the duo exploring new approaches to melody, harmonics and rhythm, especially on Saliers’ “Digging For Your Dream,” which she says is “as close to R&B as I’ve ever gotten,” and Ray’s “Sugar Tongue,” a fevered meditation on colonialism that finds her experimenting with her higher vocal range to capture an innocence not commonly displayed by the fiery rocker.

Says Saliers, “For a band like us, it might feel inauthentic if we tried to branch out in some crazy way musically. That's why Amy makes solo records, so she can do her own thing outside of what we do together. As a unit, we do what we do and Mitchell just happens to bring the best out of it. That's a good thing at this point in our career.”

One thing the Girls have done differently on Poseidon is include a second CD that features acoustic versions of all the songs, plus a bonus track, “Salty South.” It’s a chance for listeners to hear stripped down, organic versions of the songs – just the Girls in a room with a few mics – before the arrangements changed with the addition of the band.

With a Grammy, six Grammy nominations and a legacy of releases and tours behind them, the Indigo Girls have outlasted many of their peers and forged their own way in the music business. They’ve always thought independently, and have always balanced their commitment to music and performing with an unwavering commitment to social, political and environmental issues – Ray and Saliers don’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk. In 1991, Ray and Saliers co-founded the non-profit organization Honor the Earth to raise awareness and financial support for indigenous environmental justice, and over the years they have supported groups fighting for women’s rights, civil rights for same-sex couples, and the abolition of the death penalty as well as voter registration.

Now with their own imprint, the Girls have come full circle; they’ve weathered the ups and downs of the music industry and come out with their musical vision and enthusiasm intact.

“I am overwhelmingly excited to be independent because it really is where the heart of music sits for me,” says Ray, “I don't have many regrets about the major-label life of the band because we certainly got a lot out of it. We were lucky enough to be on Epic when Pearl Jam and Rage Against The Machine were our label-mates and the company was developing bands with the intent of creating catalog artists. That has all changed, and it's just not worth being on a major. It hasn’t felt worth it for a long time. Beyond that, it never fed my soul the way an independent career can.”

“I feel a great sense of freedom in finally being rid of the major-label world,” Ray says. “It’s been a burden for a while for me. I felt an honesty and sincerity making Poseidon, because I fully believe in independence.” Saliers says, “It fees liberating and centering, even in the midst of change.”

Poseidon And The Bitter Bug is the work of career artists at the top of their artistic game, invigorated to be doing what they love best – writing and performing music. With these two CDs, the Indigo Girls give listeners an intimate look at their songwriting and how it’s affected by the recording process. Poseidon is a release that affirms their position not only as musical icons but as artists who continue to live up to the high standards they’ve set for themselves.

Look for a spring and summer 2009 tour.

Who is Theresa Andersson?

Press release news:

"Late Night with Conan O'Brien" Appearance
scheduled for Feb 4, 2009!

Starbucks, January 09’ Hotel Café & Utah Residencies
and more follow NPR “Song of the Day” Spotlight

“ Swedish pop is very much of the moment, and Andersson’s particular hybrid is our favorite… the album is as intimate and arresting as any we’ve heard this year."
–Very Short List, October 2008

If you haven’t yet heard Theresa Andersson, that’s about to change.

Raised in Sweden but based in New Orleans for over a decade, Theresa Andersson mines her sonic roots of both homes on her gorgeous album Hummingbird, Go! (Basin Street Records), an intriguing blend of breezy, 60s-era pop combined with soul, gospel and Motown that features guest appearances by fellow Scandanavian Ane Brun and legendary New Orleans producer and composer Allen Toussaint.

Released to critical acclaim this past September (see press quotes below), Hummingbird, Go! has sparked interest among music programmers, the media and other tastemakers around the country. Even more impressive is her multi-instrumental one-woman live show, which almost always end with standing ovations from the audience, as was the case on her recent tour with Ane Brun and Tobias Froberg.

Early supporter KCRW, tapped “Birds Fly Away” as the station’s “Top Tune” last August. (http://www.kcrw.com/music/programs/tu/tu080821theresa_andersson_bi)

“Birds Fly Away” was featured last month on NPR’s “Song of the Day”.

The Very Short List calls Hummingbird, Go! “a favorite”.

Theresa’s homemade video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2eD4GcLohE ), which features her performing the song “Na Na Na” live in the very same kitchen where she recorded her album, has received over 750,000 views since it first appeared on the homepage of YouTube.

Watch out for Theresa in early 2009: She will appear on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” on February 4, performing “Birds Fly Away.” “Birds Fly Away” is a featured track on the upcoming Starbucks compilation Have You Heard, which will be available in all Starbucks locations starting in January. If that wasn’t enough, Theresa was just in the studio with David Byrne, recording some material for his upcoming CD (due late 2009).

Theresa will be spending January on the West Coast. Then she’ll head East in early February for Conan and a show at Joe’s Pub. Starting March she will tour nationally throughout the spring. Don’t miss her live on the following dates:

Jan 6 - Los Angeles, CA - Hotel Café (7 pm)
Jan 13 - San Francisco, CA - Hotel Utah (9 pm)
Jan 16 - Los Angeles, CA - Hotel Cafe (7 pm)
Jan 18 - San Diego, CA - Casbah (8:30 pm)
Jan 20 - Los Angeles, CA - Hotel Cafe (7 pm)
Jan 22 - San Francisco, CA - Hotel Utah (9 pm)
Jan 25 - San Diego, CA - Casbah (8:30 pm)
Jan 30 - Los Angeles, CA - Hotel Cafe (7 pm)
Feb 6 - New York, NY - Joe’s Pub (10 pm)

More critical praise for Theresa Andersson’s new CD, Hummingbird, Go!:

“Swedish vocalist blends chockablock rhythms, fairy tale instrumentation and dreamlike melodies for music that recalls a spacier, sultrier Feist.”
- Rolling Stone, September 2008

“There’s an undeniable earthiness and primal power on Hummingbird, Go!... From the very start, you sense you’re in the presence of something special…” – Blurt, Sept 2008

“’60’s-soaked sophisti-pop…” - MTV Buzzworthy, June 2008

“… [an] unconventional, focused and utterly charming disc…” - Paste, October 2008

Scott Walker Film Opens 12/17 at the IFC Center in New York City

Scott Walker: 30 Century Man is a long-overdue look at one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in rock history. The film explores his music and career, from his early days as a jobbing bass player on the Sunset Strip, to mega-stardom in Britain’s swinging 60’s pop scene as lead singer of The Walker Brothers, to his evolution into one of the most astonishing soundmakers of the last few decades.

He’s 63 years old and released his first album in over 10 years, “The Drift” on 4 A.D. Records last year to wide-spread critical acclaim. The film features exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the album as well as interviews with friends, collaborators, and fans including, among others:

David Bowie, Radiohead, Jarvis Cocker (Pulp), Brian Eno, Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy)(DVD only), Marc Almond, Alison Goldfrapp, Sting, Dot Allison, Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins), Richard Hawley, Rob Ellis, Johnny Marr (The Smiths/Modest Mouse), Gavin Friday, Lulu, Peter Olliff, Angela Morley, Ute Lemper, Ed Bicknell, Evan Parker, Hector Zazou, Mo Foster, Phil Sheppard, Pete Walsh, and more.

Directed by Stephen Kijak, who brought you the delightfully deranged documentary CINEMANIA (a profile of 5 of NYC’s most manic film buffs), this is a different form of obsession altogether. Inspiring god-like devotion from fans, Scott Walker’s has a cult that has grown considerably since his 1995 release “Tilt”, a dark and difficult masterwork. His new album takes that sound further than anyone could have imagined…

Collaborators include acclaimed DP/Director Grant Gee (”Radiohead: Meeting People is Easy”) and Graham Wood, formerly of legendary design collective Tomato.

Produced by Mia Bays, Liz Rose and Stephen Kijak

Associate Producer: Gale Harold

Executive Producer: David Bowie
World Premiere: October 31, 2006 at the 50th London Film Festival - International Premiere: Feb 2007 Berlin International Film Festival/PANORAMA - US Premiere: March 2007 SXSW Film Festival.

News: Pearl Jam Reissues Ten

PEARL JAM ANNOUNCES THE REISSUE OF BAND’S DEBUT ALBUM, TEN:
FOUR SPECIAL EDITION PACKAGES IN STORES MARCH 24, 2009 PRE-SALE OF SUPER DELUXE EDITION BEGINS TODAY AT PEARLJAM.COM

Album extras found across the four editions of Ten include:

Remaster of original Ten album + remix by producer Brendan O’Brien •

DVD of previously unreleased 1992 Pearl Jam MTV Unplugged performance with 5.1 surround sound audio remix • LP of the band’s 1992 “Drop in the Park” concert • Replica of Pearl Jam three-song demo cassette with Eddie Vedder’s original vocal dubs • Recreation of Eddie Vedder composition notebook • Never before seen memorabilia • Bonus tracks and more.

SEATTLE – Ten, the debut album that sold 12 million copies and introduced the world to Pearl Jam in 1991, will be reissued in four (4) new and expanded editions. Pre-orders of the Super Deluxe Edition begin today, December 10, 2008, through the band’s Ten Club at www.pearljam.com, with all four editions available at retail on March 24, 2009. The reissue of Ten serves as the launch of a planned two-year catalogue re-release campaign leading up to the band’s 20th anniversary in 2011.

Each Ten package will include two versions of the album: the remastered version of the original album PLUS an accompanying remixed version done by the band’s long-time producer, Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Audioslave). Details on specific extras for each of the four packages are attached.

“The band loved the original mix of Ten, but were also interested in what it would sound like if I were to deconstruct and remix it,” says producer Brendan O’Brien. “The original Ten sound is what millions of people bought, dug and loved, so I was initially hesitant to mess around with that. After years of persistent nudging from the band, I was able to wrap my head around the idea of offering it as a companion piece to the original – giving a fresh take on it, a more direct sound.”

TEN RE-DESIGN

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, who served as the art director for the original Ten packaging, reprised his role for the reissues collaborating with designer, Andy Fischer, of Cameron Crowe’s Vinyl Films (Into the Wild soundtrack LP, Vanilla Sky soundtrack LP, Harold and Maude anniversary edition soundtrack LP).

"The goal was to assemble the ultimate fan-piece,” explains Fischer. “Something Pearl Jam lovers could pore over as they experience an indelible record all over again, in an entirely new way."

“The original concept was about really being together as a group and entering into the world of music as a true band...a sort of all-for-one deal,” says Jeff Ament. “There were some elements of the original Ten artwork that didn't turn out the way we had hoped, due to time constraints. With this reissue, we’ve been able to take our time and invest resources into making the design the way we had originally intended.”

REPLICA OF PEARL JAM THREE-SONG DEMO CASSETTE IN SUPER DELUXE EDITION

In the process of digging through his archives for this project, Ament came across an old cassette marked “Momma-Son” – the fabled original Pearl Jam demo tape featuring the first recorded versions of “Alive,” “Once” and “Footsteps.” Ament and guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready had recorded instrumental tracks of these songs to help solicit a singer for their newly formed band. Mutual friend - and then Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer - Jack Irons suggested they send the tape down to San Diego surfer and little-known singer Eddie Vedder.

Completely inspired by what he heard from these musicians that he then only knew by name, Vedder quickly wrote lyrics, put these vocals to the music tracks and shipped the tape back to Seattle. Upon hearing how Vedder had transformed the songs, Ament, Gossard and McCready asked him to come up to Seattle so they could meet and have an official “tryout” together. Shortly thereafter, Pearl Jam was born. (A replica of the “Momma-Son” cassette will be included in the Super Deluxe Edition of Ten.)

Jeff Ament describes the experience of re-visiting that tape with singer Eddie Vedder:

“I think the first time that Ed or I had opened any of those boxes was a few weeks ago. I knew that the original ‘Momma-Son’ cassette was somewhere, but I hadn’t listened to it in 17, 18, 19 years. It was cool to sit down and play it for the first time with Ed and see his reaction. And to find that 90% of it stayed exactly the same as what ended up on the record. A lot of elements were identical. There was some energy flying around at that point even from 1,300 miles away from Seattle to San Diego.”

ABOUT TEN

Pearl Jam released Ten on August 27, 1991. The album reached #2 on the Billboard 200 chart, sold over 12 million copies and became one of the cultural touchstones of the 1990s. Songs such as “Alive,” “Black,” “Even Flow” and “Jeremy” became staples of rock radio, and still make frequent appearances on the band’s ever-changing concert setlists. The album was produced by Rick Parasher. Pearl Jam’s 1991 lineup was Jeff Ament (bass), Stone Gossard (guitar), Dave Krusen (drums), Mike McCready (guitar) and Eddie Vedder (vocals).

Steve McDonald This Is Not a Rebellion [EP] / Redd Kross

I own this cd, but it has long been scarce and highly sought after by Redd Kross fans.
If you want it - snatch it up while you have the chance. Steve McDonald (Redd Kross) had his first cd released at age 14, has played with Beck and Sparks, and is a very respected music producer. He is currently working with his brother Jeff on the new Redd Kross album.

Redd Kross is a great band whose style varies from project to project. If you're curious or missing any in your library - check them out here:Redd Kross Cds

The (classic cd) Neurotica reissue was great, but the recent Third Eye reissue by Rhino has no bonus tracks. The band wasn't asked for their input or they would have gladly obliged. Still - I bought one for a friend for her birthday. Redd Kross makes the perfect gift for the groovy.

If you don't own Sound it Out
by Ze Malibu Kids - I highly recommend it.

Paul Weller and Adele

I love the Adele record and everyone known I'm a Weller solo/Style Council/The Jam fan so...

From BBC's Website:

Weller-Adele combo
Paul Weller and Adele tell us about their unique session for 6 Music
05 December 2008 - Paul Weller and Adele linked up at the Maida Vale studios last night (4 December) for a special 6 Music session.

The pair sang Weller's You Do Something To Me together and then a version of the song Need Your Love So Bad.

Weller told us why they decided to perform that song: “It was Adele’s idea, which was a very good choice as well. It’s an old blues tune, which most people probably know from Fleetwood Mac but I think it goes beyond that.”

However, it could have been quite different, as Adele told 6 Music: “Initially I chose I’m Gonna Make You Love Me by Diana Ross and The Supremes with the Temptations.

“I hadn’t really heard it for a good couple of years and I got home from Amsterdam and thought, ‘Oh God, that Temptations part is too high, I don’t think Paul will be able to sing it.

“And then Diana Ross comes in. You know how there’s certain artists that can get away with talking on the song, saying like, ‘Hey Baby’. I’m not one of them.”

Adele admitted that she was apprehensive when it came to meeting Weller.

“I was really nervous,” she said. “I went to go meet him at the first Brixton Academy show he did last Monday but straight away, he was so normal.

“Not that I thought that he would be awkward or anything, but he’s just the nicest man. He made me a cup of tea so straight away and put me at ease.”

And the former The Jam frontman explained that he didn’t have to think hard about collaborating with the young, Mercury nominated, soul singer.

“I’m up for working with anyone really, who is any good,” said Weller. “It was suggested to me and I’m a massive fan of Chasing Pavements. It was one of my big records of last year, so I was more than happy to do it.”

Weller also said he was excited to be recording at the BBC studios at Maida Vale: “These studios are so great and they’ve got so much history and such a good sound in them. It’s nice to have a proper studio to work in and we’ve got a string quartet.”

“Poptastic is just plain wrong.”

Negativeland gets weirder...
Bringing You More News:

"Seeland Records is pleased to present The Teen-Pop-Noise Virus, one of the most absurd albums of all-time by Poptastic. The music, like the band itself, was spawned from the warped minds of experimental producers Chris Fitzpatrick and Thomas Dimuzio. At the core of their debut release are twelve intricately mangled songs, but in the spaces between, there is much more.

Fitzpatrick assembled Poptastic as a coed “boy-band,” conjuring the spirit of Lou Perlman, who manned the helm of the millennial teen-pop wave. Accordingly, Fitzpatrick wrote and performed pop music and enlisted random friends to sing the sappy break-up-to-make-up lyrics he wrote in an imagined teenaged perspective. Once complete, the process had really only begun, and the production team of Dimuzio and Fitzpatrick set out to obsessively destroy the album masters with electronic effects until the music sounded as if a virus had infected the studio. Although the producers suggest the album still vaguely resembles the original, all of the original masters have been destroyed; only the remix remains.

Poptastic’s alien sound has found a welcome home at Seeland Records. Influenced by and aligned with the spirit of Negativland’s music and philosophy, Poptastic has applied similar methodologies to itself. Poptastic was created for the sole purpose of sampling itself into a collage-a version of a version of something unknown and inaccessible.

Poptastic’s basic concept is accessible and humorous, yet buried in the layers of sound is a complex web of mixing, remixing, editing, re-editing, arranging, and de-arranging that continues to reveal something new with each listen. It was also designed so that in CD shuffle play, only the “hits” play, yet when in continuous linear play, the entire album is a single interwoven work; the spaces in between songs are arenas in which fragmented elements of each song collide and blend discordantly. Fitzpatrick explains, “We are finding that people are not as confused by the music as by why they find themselves listening again and again.” With a smile, Dimuzio sums up the entire project, “Poptastic is just plain wrong.”

Dirty On Purpose To Play Farewell Show At Mercury Lounge

New Year's Eve Will Be Your Last Chance To Enjoy Dirty On Purpose Live.

A personal message from Dirty on Purpose:

Hello friends,

After six years of spending an unhealthy and unusual amount of time together, Dirty on Purpose is going the way of the dodo. We got back from tour about a month ago and sat down to talk about recording another record, and realized we didn't really want to record another record. Not now anyway. So we're going our separate ways. Our best friends and practice space sharers of many years, A Place to Bury Strangers, offered us the opening slot on their New Year's Eve gig at Mercury Lounge. We thought it was an appropriate way to wind things down and say goodbye to our friends and fans.

Get your tickets now -- it's gonna sell out.

We're still playing music and we hope you'll come support our other projects: Joe and Doug harmonize sweetly in Neckbeard Telecaster; George shreds the bass in Coin Under Tongue; Joe helms Joe and the Flying Spoons; and Doug plays with Purse Snatchers and Black Acid.

Finally, we're all still buddies and live in the same town, so we reserve the right to change our minds and get back together in six months if we feel like it.

Love,
DOP

Jóhann Jóhannsson (Modern Classical)

Jóhann Jóhannsson - Modern Classical / Experimental Composer From Iceland

I've been listening to his new album Fordlandia which was recently released by 4AD and think it's lovely. There was a documentary about Icelandic music I was going to see, but didn't. He must have been one of the artists featured? I'll have to google when I have more patience. I want to get back to relaxing / enjoying his music. Here is a short piece Fordlandia titled "The Rocket Builder." http://sendshack.com/download/3t32i3b

I visited his website and this sounds really interesting - (regarding the work"IBM 1401, a User's Manual")

"We will in this new piece take this idea further and explore the boundaries between the concert and dance theatre. Erna and Margret use their voices as an extension of the body, not simply in a ォ musical サ capacity, but as a source of sounds and vocal textures. At times, the voice is used melodically, but sometimes more as a generator of sounds and noises, ranging from animalistic and primitive screams and shrieks, deep rumbles and grunts (partly influenced from the grunts of death metal singers) to childlike babble, almost imperceptible warbles and tweets and high pitched, uncanny siren songs. Sounds that are connected with emotions, sobs, distorted laughter, sighs, moans, wails, sounds of despair and pity used in a textural way, like an instrument. This use of the voice will blend with more melodic singing. The singing is often modulated by unnatural breathing (hyperventilation) and by letting violent movements affect the voice. Erna applies the same logic to her voice as to her body using the same principles she applies to movements."

He is involved with the Kitchen Motors label. I am totally ignorant of these artists. He apparently also wrote a pop piece for Marc Almond? I'll have to invest more time in reading his site and going to his myspace I think. If you have anyone on your holiday list who listens to New Age (which I hate) because it is relaxing, and they are otherwise intimidated or uninterested in Classical - I suggest this album.

And I am listening to this right now and digging it a lot. I wrote about the band once, but hadn't digested more than one song and I am so glad I went back and tried again. It would make a great gift for the music fan who (thinks they have) everything. For some reason I think Pavement fans would appreciate it - maybe the humor and the sense I get that this guy truly loves music.

I sure hate it when record labels give extras so that consumers favor one particular format. That's how they got away with ceasing production of LPs.

Duran Duran Cancels Last Night's Gig

Their statement "Nick Rhodes, is still suffering from a very serious inner ear infection and doctors have told him that he is not allowed to travel. Nick will travel as soon as he is well enough, so that the band can resume the final dates of their tour. All of the band members are extremely disappointed that they will not be able to play tonight in San Antonio, and hope that they can make up the date in the near future."
