Short Notice - Makin' Movies With The Chemical Brothers

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS CREATE ‘MIDNIGHT MADNESS’
THE WORLD OVER WITH GOOGLE EARTH

Ever since their inception in 1993, The Chemical Brothers have soundtracked numerous special moments in countless people’s lives. Whether it’s the music of choice for a big night out, or the key moment that kicks the party into ascension, or even the inevitable comedown period in the milky pre-dawn hours, it is nigh on impossible to contest Tom and Ed’s enduring impact.

Now, The Chemical Brothers are giving their loyal fans a chance to give something back. In a completely unprecedented move, fans can now contribute their own vision to the Chems’ glittering nocturnal world: by taking part in a unique, all-encompassing global video project using the Google Earth application.

This is an exciting invitation to participate on a never before seen global scale. By making a short film or photograph that revolves around the theme of ‘Midnight Madness’ – also the name of their latest anthem-in-waiting, due for release on August 19 – entrants will get to upload their work onto Google Earth via The Chemical Brothers’ website, and tag it to its exact location. Furthermore, the best work will then be edited by ace producers Nexus to form a new concept music video for ‘Midnight Madness’, executed through the Google Earth application. The film will then be premiered on The Chemical Brothers website and premiered as a YouTube exclusive on the same week as the ‘Best Of’ album, Brotherhood is released.

All interested applicants would have to do is to make a film, anywhere from 2 to 20 seconds, celebrating the insanity that goes on at the stroke of midnight and related to the specific point of origin, and consequently upload it onto The Chemical Brothers’ website, before August 25 2008. For details, go to www.thechemicalbrothers.com, and get ready to embrace the madness…

Even if you’re not a budding filmmaker you can still get involved with the madness, as Google Earth enables you to tag and then launch your favorite Chems track from your location on Google Earth, so anyone passing your area can go and click on your location and discover which stone cold classic from the duo’s seminal back catalogue is your favorite! Check out www.thechemicalbrothers.com for more information.

‘Midnight Madness’ was be released as a digital download on August 19 and the album Brotherhood (single disc and limited edition double disc) will be released on September 2 on Astralwerks.

Xiu Xiu (all info from the press release)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As if seeing them play live wasn't enough Xiu Xiu have given you three very cool projects to be involved in:

As mentioned earlier David Horovitz will be doing his disposable camera project.

And Jamie's ask him any question project

Now there's Ches' project:

Visit Xiu Xiu's merch table on their current tour and ask them for the tape recorder.

Drummer/percussionist Ches Smith will be providing a tape recorder at the merch table in each town for anyone to record short fragments: text, music, whatever. Ches will then write short (percussion) pieces for each town which will include the tape material recorded at that town's gig. These pieces will, at the end of the tour, be posted online on the Xiu Xiu blog as mp3s, credited to each town, free for all to enjoy.

Mirah News

I am a big fan of Mirah and just read this news from K:

Mirah, the Early Years!
Many times Mirah recorded songs "for her new album" which never made it there; someone somewhere released so many of these songs on singles and compilations, that now someone else had to wrangle them all together in one place. That someone was Modern Radio, and that place is the album The Old Days Feeling. It includes fourteen Mirah songs from the distant past, including three that have never been released, not even on obscure 7" singles. One of the songs is Mirah's cover of the Halo Benders song "Lonesome Sundown". Super duper.

Oh and it's only 8.99 for the cd.

N.Y.C. Dates announced for Flaming Lips "Mars" Film

As posted on the Cinema Purgatorio website:

From September 12, 2008 7:00 AM
Through September 30, 2008 10:00 PM

Location
The KGB Complex's Kraine Theater
85 East Fourth Street
New York, NY 10003

DVD = Christmas 2008 (makes a nice gift for bloggers)

Psychedelic rock band the Flaming Lips present Christmas on Mars: A Fantastical Film Freakout Featuring the Flaming Lips, a glorious science fiction film that marks the directorial debut of the Lips’ visionary frontman Wayne Coyne. Seven years in the making, Christmas on Mars features original music by the Flaming Lips (“The greatest US band today” - The Guardian), with acting performances by all band members, and many others from their Oklahoma City-based team. Comedian Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live) and actor Adam Goldberg (Dazed and Confused, Two Days in Paris) also appear.

It’s Christmastime, and the colonization of Mars is underway. However, when an oxygen generator and a gravity control pod malfunction, Major Syrtis (the Lips’ Steven Drozd) and his team (including the Lips’ Michael Ivins) fear the worst. Syrtis also hallucinates about the birth of a baby, and many other strange things. Meanwhile, a compassionate alien superbeing (Coyne) arrives, inspiring and helping the isolated astronauts.

Christmas on Mars screens in a custom-designed screening room within the Kraine Theater of the KGB Complex at 85 East Fourth Street. A former Ukrainian Socialist Social Club, the KGB Complex features two theater spaces, a comedy club, and a bar. For Christmas on Mars, Cinema Purgatorio is converting the KGB’s Kraine Theatre into a superb screening room with high definition video and the custom designed Zeta Bootis Mega Supersonic Super-Sound Surround System, which the Flaming Lips created specifically for this film.

Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill (Hollywood that is)

There is a rumor that the infamous "they" are remaking the classic Russ Meyer film Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill. I really hope this isn't true. Not that I am against more boobs in films, but there are enough creative people with tons of ideas who just aren't connected.

There is no need for all of these rehashes and remakes. I find the frame for frame rehashes especially absurd. Psycho? What was Van Sant thinking? Even someone with one film 101 course in 'em knows you can't do better than Hitchcock in Psycho. And what was the point of Haneke's Funny Games exact remake? Was it because it's assumed that American audiences love their violence, but can't handle it with subtitles? And if the film was an exercise in manipulation - was this Haneke's way of saying "In case you were too dumb to get it the first time - here it is again, but with Michael Pitt?" Texas Chainsaw Massacre? And Halloween - Rob Zombie you should get a rock in your candy bag next year.

A gossip column (which I only came across when trying to research this rumor which was posted on Bust.com) stated that Tarantino was remaking the classic go go girl murder boobfest, but then again it also said that Britney Spears would play Varla. I am choosing to think he is above such sacrilege - being a film connoisseur of both fine films and cult classics. Anyway, he's in pre-production for Inglorious Bastards. I checked IMDB though - and it is listed for 2010. So someone is at least toying with the idea of remaking it. Disconcerting. Enough with the comic books and sequels and remakes already. Do I have to sic Z-Man on their asses?

Finally... Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS DVD 9/16/08

I've been waiting for a long time for this blast from my past. I'm sure I've seen it multiple times since it's release, but it hasn't ever been properly issued. I had a bad vhs copy, then bought a bootleg one, then VH1 played it ONCE - yes once. Well Rhino finally got with the program and will release it next month.

For those of you who haven't seen it - it's a pre-riot grrl riot film about an all girl band that is punk and becomes a phenomenon and sells out. But I don;t want to give it all away for those of you who have yet to see it. Corinne (Third Degree) Burns is played by Diane Lane. She and her sister and cousin (if memory serves) start a band to escape their nowhere lives in their nowhere town. Laura Dern playes one of The Stains. They wear outrageous (for the time) costumes and hairstyles and their rapidly growing fan base call themselves "Skunks." It blew me away as a youngin' and I thought it was the coolest movie I had ever seen. I know some of you also wathed USA Nightflight.

Also: Steve Jones and Paul Cook of The Sex Pistols and Paul Simonon (bass, The Clash) appear as members of the punk band for whom The Stains initially open, and Fee Waybill of the Tubes plays a classic rocking old fart who od's.

You can pre-order it here.

New Placebo

From the Placebo Website:

PLACEBO - THE RETURN!

Placebo are back in the studio working on a new album! The band finished their last touring campaign in September of last year in the USA (on the Projekt Revolution tour with Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance). Since then the band have taken some much needed time out and over the past couple of months have been hard at work writing and demoing new material in London. The boys are now recording with producer David Bottrill (the man behind Tool’s ‘Aenima’, ‘Salival’ and ‘Lateralus’ albums, Silverchair’s ‘Diorama’ and dEUS ‘The Ideal Crash’). Engineering the album is James Brown who worked with the band on ‘Meds’.

...And on the drums with Placebo...?????!!!!! Introducing... Mr Steve Forrest! Hailing from Modesto, California, he was previously the drummer with American rock band, ‘Evaline’. Some of you may have spotted Steve playing with Evaline supporting Placebo on their US tour in October '06.

The next Paul Weller Single (U.K.)

From Paul's camp:
Right, first up, and just in case you hadn't picked this up elsewhere the release date for Paul's new single 'All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)' has been put back a week from 18th August to the 25th. The digital release will still occur on the 18th but the physical formats will now follow a week later.

The official release will have a three track CD with a radio edit of 'All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)' along with 'Push It Along' and 'Big Brass Buttons' featuring Bobby Gillespie.

There will also be two highly collectible 7" vinyl options, the first coming in a Green Island Records 7" bag with 'All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)' Radio Edit backed by 'Push It Along'. The second comes in an Artworked 7" bag with an acoustic version of 'All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)' backed by an acoustic version of 'Pretty Flamingo'.

Be Your Own Pet Breaking Up?

Unfortunately - despite a good recent release for which I had posted a video - Be Your Own Pet appear to be calling it quits. Here is the word from their website:

To all of our fans,We are sad to bring you the news that our upcoming shows in the UK (dates below) are going to be our last as a band. We thank you for all your love and support these past few years - its been a blast but the time has come for the 4 of us to go our separate ways. 22 August: Reading Festival - Reading, UK 23 August: Leeds Festival - West Yorkshire, UK 25 August: Carling Academy 2 - Liverpool, UK 26 August: Dingwalls - London, UK

Beck Gamma Ray

Beck has managed to make another genius video. I always enjoy his/his director's choices. New Pollution is still in my top 5 favorite videos of all time. I would include it here, but Universal Music Group in it's wisdom has disabled embedding. I hope ths isn't a trend. Haven't the labels learned anything yet? It's promotion people. Sheesh.

Flight of the Conchordes

I'm so excited that they decided to release the Bowie track on the full length album. It's a classic.
